From early civil rights movements to the struggles of Black sailors and the work of abolitionists before the Civil War, the promise of birthright citizenship in the 14th Amendment was shaped by many powerful voices and experiences.

Moderated by Sherrilyn Ifill, Founder of the 14th Amendment Center, this conversation explores that history and how it influenced the way people understood what it meant to be an American in the years after the Civil War.
